KARACHI: Rebutting the allegations levelled by Sindh’s former home minister Dr Zulfikar Mirza, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement said here on Tuesday that the allegation relating to a US plot to dismember Pakistan was not only ridiculous but also grave and malicious.

Speaking at a press conference, Muttahida leader Faisal Subzwari said the MQM and Altaf Hussain were not against Pakhtuns and the conversation attributed by Dr Mirza to Mr Hussain regarding the killing of Pakhtuns “is an unabashed lie, baseless and a figment of imagination of his devious mind”.

He was accompanied by MPAs Moin Khan and Khalid bin Wilayat.

At a press conference two days ago, Dr Mirza hurled serious allegations against the MQM and Mr Hussain and Mr Subzwari rejected almost every allegation.

About the US plot to break up Pakistan as alleged by Dr Mirza, the MQM leader said: “This is nothing but slander and a white lie. Dr Mirza has tried to mislead the international community, the armed forces of Pakistan, national defence institutions and
patriotic people by making these unfounded and baseless allegations.”

He said Mr Hussain was a patriotic leader and the MQM was a party of descendants of the founders of Pakistan who sacrificed millions of lives in the struggle for a separate state. “Everyone in Pakistan knows that it was Dr Mirza who talked about dismembering Pakistan in his speech before the media.”

About the allegation that Mr Hussain told the former provincial home minister that he would continue to kill Pakhtuns, Mr Subzwari said it was meant to create hatred among Pakhtuns for Mr Hussain and to pit them against the MQM. “We want to assure Pakhtuns that Altaf Hussain and the MQM have never been against them. We consider them as our brethren and hold their life, property and dignity as sacred as those of our own. It is actually Dr Mirza who has been trying to foment rouble between Pakhtuns and Mohajirs and protect miscreants.”

He said there never was a dispute between the Baloch and Mohajirs in Karachi before Dr Mirza became the home minister. “He conspired to incite violence between Balochs and Mohajirs. Dr Mirza patronises a few criminals of gang war in Lyari who made innocent Balochs hostage at gunpoint.”

The MQM leader said Dr Mirza was still supporting criminals and terrorists, which was the basic reason of continuing lawlessness in Karachi. Every businessman, industrialist, shopkeeper and even a child knew who supported the extortion mafia in Karachi, he added.

He said as soon as Rangers moved against terrorists involved in gang war in Lyari, arrested criminals and unearthed torture cells, Dr Mirza started levelling baseless allegations not only against the MQM but also against the government, the interior minister, the Sindh governor and PPP leaders Agha Siraj Durrani and Babar Awan.

Mr Subzwari said the MQM had taken two days to review the situation and reached the conclusion that Dr Mirza’s main objective was to get the action against criminal elements stopped and to influence the proceedings of the Supreme Court of Pakistan on the suo motu case relating to bloodshed, mayhem and extortion mafia in Karachi.

He said the MQM supported the ongoing crackdown on criminal elements in Karachi and wanted an indiscriminate action to restore law and order.

Answering a question, he said the Rangers had raided MQM offices in Lyari, Garden and Usmanabad and picked up dozens of party activists. “But despite this we still want the action against criminals to continue in an indiscriminate manner.”

Answering another question, Mr Subzwari said the MQM had indirectly explained its position on the allegation about killing of Pakhtuns to Awami National Party chief Asfandyar Wali Khan.

About the reports of a joint investigation team, which had been shown by Dr Mirza at his press conference, the Muttahida leader said the MQM believed that unless the guilt was established in a court of law the accused should be considered
innocent. “Hundreds of cases were made against the MQM to defame it and harm its credibility. Zulfiqar Mirza should prove his allegations in courts, instead of showing them on the media. He should let the courts do their work, instead of himself becoming a judge and jailer.”

Mr Subzwari, who is the deputy leader of MQM’s parliamentary party in Sindh Assembly, said the MQM hoped that President Asif Ali Zardari and other leaders of the PPP would foil the conspiracy of Dr Mirza and other extremist elements of his kind who wanted to pit the PPP and MQM against each other in order to destabilise the democratic process. “We will continue to work for bringing peace and stability to Sindh, particularly Karachi.”
